چکیده

Abstract The present work is concerned with adhesive bonding of thermoplastic composites used in general aerospace applications, including polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyetherimide (PEI) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) carbon fibre composites. Three different surface treatments have been applied to the PEEK, PPS PEI-based order enhance adhesion: atmospheric plasma, ultraviolet radiation (UV) isopropanol wiping as a control. Water contact angles free energies were measured following standard experimental procedure based on employment three liquid droplets. Infrared spectroscopy X-ray photoelectron (XPS) subsequently performed characterize chemistry samples after treatment. single lap joints manufactured bonded by an Aerospace grade epoxy-based film originally developed for use metals but ability bond treated thermoplastics good strength (supplied Henkel Ireland). Quasi-static (QS) tests conducted. shear was evaluated, failure mechanisms examined range considered. It found that performances PEEK considerably improved plasma UV resulting cohesive delamination failures, while PEI unaffected very well throughout.

Role of Plasma Surface Treatments on Wetting and Adhesion

There are many current and emerging wetting and adhesion issues which require an additional surface processing to enhance interfacial surface properties. Materials which are non-polar, such as polymers, have low surface energy and therefore typically require surface treatment to promote wetting of inks and coating. One way of increasing surface energy and reactivity is to bombard a polymer surf...

Effect of atmospheric plasma versus conventional surface treatments on the adhesion capability between self-adhesive resin cement and titanium surface

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of atmospheric plasma (APL) versus conventional surface treatments on the adhesion of self-adhesive resin cement to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty plates of machined titanium (Ti) discs were divided into five groups (n=12): 1) Untreated (CNT); 2) Sandblasted (SAB); 3) Tribochemically treated (ROC); 4) Tungsten CarbideBur ...
